How about selecting a test in the Tests Window (assuming filters allow it), when the user selects the 'Go to starting/selected test' command?
I can see the issue you have with filters and why pinned tests became necessary. It isn't however obvious to use this feature when what your really want to do is navigate.
You could even say something like: "Test currently hidden in Tests Window, use Pin to reveal", in the status bar (if you wanted to make it obvious what's going on).
